Aligning equations

Version: 3.5x, 4.x, 5.x - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word

To align equations, create a multiline display instead of a series of single-line displays. Although the program automatically aligns each line on the first binary relation in the line, you can center each line of the display, choose a different alignment point, or specify that the contents of the display be aligned as a single equation on multiple lines.

Centering each line

  1. Select the display and choose Properties.

  2. Choose Advanced.

  3. Check Enable Alignment.

  4. Check Each Line Centered.

  5. Choose OK.

Setting the alignment

  1. Place the insertion point to the left of the character you want to align with other lines.

Be sure the insertion point is where LaTeX can see it; that is, not inside parentheses or some other mathematical object.

  2. From the Edit or Context menu, choose Set Alignment.

Aligning a multiline display as a single equation on multiple lines

  1. Select the display.

  2. Choose Properties.

  3. Choose Advanced.

  4. Check Enable Alignment.

  5. Check Single Equation on Multiple Lines.

  6. If you want the equation to have a number, for each line of the display choose the Line Number and set Number to Auto.

NoteNumbering for all lines in the display must be set to Auto or the equation number will not be typeset. Regardless of the number of lines, LaTeX generates only a single number for the display.

  7. Choose OK.
