Numbering multiline equations with numbers and letters

When you typeset in SWP and SW, you can number an entire multiline display
with a single number and add a letter to each subequation to indicate its
sequence in the display, as in 1a, 1b, 1c.... The sequence can be interrupted
by text.
Using the Display Properties dialog

Select the display and choose Properties.

Choose Advanced.
-
Select Enable Subequation Numbering.

To continue the lettering sequence from the previous display, check
Subequation Continuation.

For each line of the display that you want to letter, select the line number
and choose Auto.

Choose OK.
Using subequation environments
-
Select the equation and choose Properties.
-
Check the Auto numbering option for each line of
the equation for which you want a number to appear.

In the Display Properties dialog, choose
Advanced.

If you are using a Key for Whole Display, delete it.
-
Uncheck Enable Subequation Numbering and choose
OK.

Place the insertion point immediately before the display and enter an
encapsulated TeX field.

In the entry area, type \begin{subequations} and
choose OK.

If you are using a Key for Whole Display, from the
Insert menu, choose
Marker and enter the key that was deleted in
step 4 above, then choose OK.

Place the insertion point immediately after the last line in the display and
enter another encapsulated TeX field.

In the entry area, type \end{subequations} and
choose OK.
